So it’s been a while since I wrote my first post. I’ve spent the first part of my six week holidays seeing friends, coming up with some new ideas for short film screenplays (one of which I am going to write this week) and seeing my family which is something I don’t do often enough really. Oh I also went to the David Lynch exhibition too and saw some of David Lynch’s art which was super fun and exciting to see up close.
As you can see the Lynch exhibition was very typical of his style. The pieces were dark, disturbing and surreal. There was a sense that Lynch was laying some of his demons out for the world to see. The above image in particular shows a figure with a suburban background and a speech bubble with the word ‘Philadelphia’ in it which references the city where Lynch grew up and described as the “sickest, most corrupt, decaying, fear-ridden city imaginable”. So there’s a real sense that Lynch’s personality which was shaped by the darkness of that city is on show in many of the pieces.
Many of the pieces were made from physical items like Mickey Mouse heads, wires, bits of plastic and such. These physical objects were merged together in sometimes grim ways and mixed with paintings or texture work and the amalgamation works really well for the most part. There is also a playful side to Lynch’s art too where on pieces like ‘Ricky finds out he has shit for brains’ he shows that his love of art and the process of ‘making’ isn’t all serious and can be as playful as the jovial sequences that Lynch fans are used to from Twin Peaks.
Overall the exhibition was great albeit a little brief. You do want more and as a massive film and TV fan I really wanted to see something relating to Lynch’s films but it’s clear that the man wants to keep his various artistic mediums separate.
